Date: May 30, 2008
Location: Lowther's Hill Cemetery
Darlington, SC
Reported Paranormal Activity:
Hauntings include feelings of dread or nausea. It seems about ten to fifteen degrees cooler at the entrance than normal. Apparitions have been known to show up on camera. During the 50's or 60's there was supposedly a huge black man that took children up there to murder them. Witnesses report hearing them screaming and crying and see a huge black shape, a pair of red eyes, & a little boy wearing a gray "ante-bellum" outfit standing behind one of the only tombstones left there (Joseph is the name on the stone).
Another story goes like this...
Montrose was a house servent that belonged a large land owner in the area. This land owner had a young daughter and Montrose was charged with looking after that her. The father gave his daughter a pony that was somewhat green and frisky. Montrose was charged with looking after her to ensure her safety with that pony. One day the pony ran away with her and killed her ... the father then charged Montrose with looking after her grave for all of eternity. When he died, he was to be buried in the same cemetery as the child so he could continue to look after her. It's said that if you approach her grave, you’ll be confronted by the ghost of Montrose.

Investigation Report:
We have vistors!
It was agreed upon that we would meet at a crossroad before heading up to the cemetery. To discourage any teenagers that may come our way to party, we decided it would be best if we placed our vehicles in a semi circle at the top of the enterance road leading into Lowther's Hill . It's a good thing we did because within an hour we had company. Rick explained to them that they could not stay because they did not have permission from the owners. They weren't too happy but they left and did not return while we were there.
Back to the investigation:
We arrived at Lowther's Hill around 8:00 pm. We spent the first hour settling in and checking equipment. Once we received an all clear from Rick, our tech guy, we gathered up and handed out the equipment to everyone. By 9:00 pm we were ready to get started. We placed some items at different places thoughout the cemetery and got base line readings. Since Lowther's Hill is so open now that it has been cleaned up we decided to go out in one group instead of breaking up into two teams because of our voices traveling and the interference it would cause with the audio recordings.
We walked through the cemetery and then decided to walk on the little dirt lane that goes around it. In the back corner we picked up several spikes on the EMF meters. We also received a LOT of spikes around the area of the shallow grave and the dirt mound, one of the spikes went as high as 2.4.
It's said to say but other then the occisinal EMF spike and the few EVP's we did not catch anything else during this visit. It was noted that the whole "feel" of the place has changed. It's almost like things are more peaceful now that everything has been cleaned up.

EPV's: Below are a few EVP's we captured during this investigation. Our interpretation will be listed at the end, so it won't influence what you hear. Let's us know if you hear something different.
1. Listen between 2 and 5 seconds, right before I speak. "Don't"
2. Listen between the 2 and 5 seconds, right after I speak and then Mike gets a spike at 18 seconds of .6. "Odd Bangs" ((This has been determined to be cars hitting the reflectors on the road.))
3. Listen after I tell them to turn it on or knock it over, around 4 seconds. "What"
4. Listen after I ask if the coins are still on heads, around 3 to 4 seconds, then Mike gets a hit of .8 At first I thought this might be one of us but it does not have the voice spikes that our voices have. "Coins"
5. I did not hear an EVP here but this is where Mike got the "1.1" spike and I thought I would just cut it out for reference. If you pick up anything here, let me know. "Sign"
6. Listen between 8 and 11 seconds, after Rick and Craig ask about names. "Name"
Our interpretation of the above EVP's:
1. "Don't....bring that in here."
2. This has been determined to be cars hitting the reflectors on the road.
3. "What she say?"
4. "Yea"
5. No EVP here but did get an EMF spike of 1.1 after question.
6. "Jennie" then a laugh
Conclusion:
When taking into the equation the long history of Lowther's Hill and the stories that have been told over the years, one would like to assume that it is indeed haunted. However, due to the lack of scientific evidence, we can not prove that Lowther's Hill Cemetery is indeed haunted.
